Harrowsmith Resident Awarded the MVA Commendation
Dr. Daniel D. Eustace of Harrowsmith was awarded the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation on July 29; the presentation was held at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton. The award is given to individuals who “have performed commendable service to the Veteran community and/or individuals who represent commendable role models for their fellow Veterans."
Dan is a retired Canadian army Officer (RCR) with 30 years domestic and international staff and operational experience, including Afghanistan in 2008. He holds a PhD in international relations, and continues to instruct senior leaders at the Canadian Forces College in Toronto.
Dan and his wife Kathleen moved to this area in 2006, and transferred from his Royal Canadian Legion Toronto branch to the Bob Richardson Branch 496 in Sydenham, wherein he served as Second Vice-President and Public Relations Officer; he continues to organize and conduct the annual Remembrance Day services for the Sydenham community. He also a Warden of St. Paul’s Anglican Church.
Dan has supported veteran’s in numerous ways, including support to Sunnybrook Hospital K Wing fund-raising, organizing and participating in Remembrance Day services, planning outings for hospitalized veterans, and supporting the Toronto Invictus Games. During his in time in uniform he played a significant role in the tragic, but necessary, duty of repatriating the fallen from overseas operations that included aspects of the Highway of Heroes, and the immediate care of fallen comrades’ families.
In keeping with his long-term commitment to veterans he was the editor for two editions of Remembrance magazine which is published annually to support the National Wall of Remembrance project which will “create a single place of remembrance for all Canada's fallen heroes - an installation that families, friends and the people of Canada can visit and pay homage to our war dead.” On July 9th Kingston City Council voted unanimously in favour of the motion to enable the construction of the National Wall of Remembrance monument in a suitable location in downtown Kingston.
