Spring ‘77, parking lot outside the gatehouse where several of us had just returned from the Cadet Mess following a Ballet performance downtown. We were discussing footwear, specifically the merits of Lucite stilettos that some of the ballerinas had been wearing versus slippers or bare feet. I seem to recall that the discussion was centered on ankle support and tendon damage. Al Lounsbury advised that these were professional athletes who had undergone extensive silicone treatments to enhance their ankle and calf muscles. Doug McLean pointed out that much of the silicone had clearly been misapplied and was nowhere near their ankles. As the discussion grew more animated Al hopped up onto one of the parked cars, reclining on the hood in front of the steering wheel. As he waved his arms to make his point, he started sliding forward. As he accelerated the conversation stopped. Al shot off the car horizontally and seemed to hover in mid-air for a few seconds. He then plummeted onto the ground, his back and head hitting with a muffled thump. He laid there for what seemed like an eternity, finally moaning “I knew it was going to hurt when it took so long to fall”.

We never did resolve the footwear dilemma.
